2002, we hardly knew you
A look at some of the year's best LGBT books
by Joe E. Jeffreys
The good news is, the number and quality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgenderthemed books published each year by mainstream publishers seemingly continues to grow. The bad news is that independent gay bookstores struggle today to survive and compete with the big chains and on-line booksellers.
Here are a few of the best LGBT books 2002 had to offer. Support your local gay bookstore and buy some of these fine new titles from them.
Fiction
My Loose Thread by Dennis Cooper (Canongate)-The story of Larry, his incestuous affair with his younger brother, murder for hire of one of his high school classmates and a school shooting rampage. Told in Cooper's trademark banal yet multi-layered teen speak.
Boulevard by Jim Grimsley (Algonquin) Newell, a sweet if uncultured country boy, finds a room in New Orleans French Quarter circa 1978 and explores its many decadent and carnivalesque twists and turns as he discovers his sexuality and meets an array of character types you either know or wish you did. Good reading.
You Are Not a Stranger Here by Adam Haslett (Doubleday)—A dazzling debut collection of short stories with tender and perplexing gay characters and themes like the damaged high school boy who aches for the brutal attentions of the class bully or the gay son who fears he may have inherited his father's bi-polar disorder.
At Swim, Two Boys by Jamie O'Neill (Scribner)-Two young Irish boys in 1915 challenge each other to swim to an island in Dublin Bay. During their training they fall in love as the Easter Uprising unfolds. A touching and tragic novel with the ring of James Joyce and Samuel Beckett.
The Snow Garden by Christopher Rice (Talk/Miramax Books)--Cinematic visuals and a tight plot make the pages blizzard by. Rice's compelling sophomore novel concerns a mysterious college boy who seduces one his married professors, murder, a cult and the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch and modern architecture.
Fingersmith by Sarah Waters (Riverhead) Water's third novel of gripping Victorian lesbiana is a melodramatic wonder of underworld characters. Its also a stinging indictment of turn of the century sexual values.
Non-fiction
Sex Crime Panic by Neil Miller (Alyson) — A fascinating true story of anti-gay hysteria in 1955 Iowa that results in the arrests and incarceration of several innocent men who were perceived as sexual threats. Miller spins his fine research into a most readable story. Skipping Towards Gomorrah: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Pursuit of Happiness in America by Dan Savage (Dutton)-Irreverent sex columnist Dan Savage takes on our great country's sexual hang-ups in a series of insightful and opinionated essays as he sets out across America to observe and commit each of the seven deadly sins. Pride finds him tackling gay-pride. As funny as it is true and vice-versa.
Biography
Hero of Flight 93: Mark Bingham by Jon Barrett (Alyson)-A considered biography of 9/11 participant Mark Bingham that smartly interrogates his place as a gay hero. Ridiculous! The Theatrical Life and Times of Charles Ludlam by David Kaufman (Applause) The backstage story of a theatrical genius who plied his queer aesthetic straight into an unsuspecting mainstream audience. Being ridiculous has never been the same since Charles Ludlam and Kaufman's biography brings him back to life.
Martins) At last the truth about this legendary film star's even more legendary death. No exotic dildos but male hustlers are involved.
Memoir or autobiography
Land's End by Michael Cunningham (Crown)-Pulitzer Prize-winner Cunningham reflects on the history, peculiarities, eccentricities and eccentrics of the gay-mecca Provincetown, MA.
The End of Innocence by Chastity Bono (Alyson)-Bono's honest account of a difficult period in her life when she was outed in the tabloids, trying to start a music career and losing her lover to cancer.
Find Me by Rosie O'Donnell (Warner)— A lot happened to Rosie this year including publication of her memoir. Way more than a coming-out story with mere passing references to her partner, the book focuses on the deep relationship O'Donnell develops with a pregnant teen and the truths and wisdom they teach each other.
Art and coffee table books
A Hidden Love by Dominique Fernandez (Prestel)-A rich, big book tracing gay imagery in the arts from the ancient Greeks through the East and up to present day artists.
A Hidden Love
It's many color plates are like the art history slide talk of your dreams.
Leigh Bowery Looks by Fergus Greer (Violette Editions)-A large selection of quality studio photos of the late great club icon and truly outrageous fashion creator Leigh Bowery in a dazzling array of his otherworldly creations.
Young readers and children's books
Abarat by Clive Barker (Harper Collins)— Twisted horror master Barker turns his eye to the Harry Potter and Hobbit set with this Alice in Wonderland-like tale of a young girl who escapes her boring hometown for adventures in Abarat, a vast archipelago where every hour of the day is a different island. Barker's story telling is as intense and detailed as his color illustrations for the book.
The Sissy Duckling by Harvey Fierstein (Simon & Schuster) Fierstein's delightful and progressive Aesopean fable, with charming color illustrations by Henry Cole, tells the story of Elmer, a much put-upon sissy duckling. Elmer wins the respect and changes the attitudes of his duck-community, while finding out that in the larger world he is not so different but will always be special. Now is there any better message?
Transgender
Normal by Amy Bloom (Random House) Critically acclaimed writer Bloom's first non-fiction book discovers her exploring transgendered individuals, communities and events across America.
Miss Vera's Cross-Dress for Success by Veronica Vera (Villard)-Founder of the first cross-dressing academy in the world, Vera's book compiles all the advice and resources one might need to cross dress along with stories of those in the transgender comRamon Novarro by Andre Soares (St. «munity, we as
